Hi all
Would love to get your thoughts on this,( There are a few more pictures on my blog too). i have been dying to have a go at this project, I took a hard back book removed the insides, then replaced with lining and added more up-cycled broken jewelry to the front. Overall I am pretty pleased with the results but think next time will use proper fabric glue as go in a mess with the glue gun!!Lol
Thanks for looking

That's such a great idea! :D
What a perfect place to keep special notes and love letters (wedding idea maybe? or anniversaries with matching bits and bobs from the honeymoon?) much more interesting than a box.
I must admit that I too have a tendancy to rip the innards out of books. Only boring ones though.

I spent hours this morning trailing round charity shops looking for the perfect book, I've decided to make one of these as a wedding keepsake for my friend for whom I am going to be a bridesmaid. It took forever to find a suitable book, eventually found one with a lovely shiney silver hardcover, but also got a purple one and a light tealy blue one too. Thanls for sharing! I've put a link to your blog on my blog, hope you don't mind.

what is up-cycled?

what is up-cycled?
"Upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable or downcycled and transforming it into something of greater use and value." This process allows for the reduction of waste and virgin material use.
taken from wiki ;) hth

I did think that is what was meant. Blimey I'm having a hard time keeping up with all these new variations on our language, having to keep up with my kids changing the meaning of words (apparently if something is sick now it means it's really good!?) and trying to keep up with text type and what passes for grammer plus people on forums writing in initials instead of saying what they mean. Now I've got to learn wiki. surely if you are re using something that was broken or old and no longer used for it's origional purpose it is being re-cycled why do we need another made up word it's like the people who rename their jobs for no other reason than to sound grander than they are.
Oh yes the bags looks absolutely great or in newspeak I suppose I should say they are sick

I love it! Well done! It's a great idea!
You could sell these as a bespoke thing for people who have a favourite book, or with beautiful vintage leather books!

That bag is gorgeous! Such a clever idea, I really would love to try it myself some day, though I am useless with glue. I bought a fabric glue to put some purse clasps in my bags and ruined the fabric cause i got it everywhere, despite taping the bag lol. And then the glue didn't even stick well at all =/
Anyway thats a fabulous idea! Good job!

I've started mine woooohooooo! done the hard bit - gluing the fabric lining in, it was a bit messy and the glue I've used (uhu multi purpose stuff) has marked the material in places and dried really hard, but it's not too bad. I just need to find something to use as straps now and some embellishments on the front, then I'll post some pics. I'm going to make a couple and use them at cradft fairs to display some of my jewellery on.

Wow that is possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen! Love it! totally awesome - especially for a bookworm like me! :)
Btw I'm new to this site - what does up-cycling mean exactly???

Basically it means taking something that would otherwise be discarded and making something new from it. I suppose it is the same as recycling though it can usually still be seen for what it was if you look carefully. That's my interpretation anyway. May not be the right one :D

I just came on here to say thanks for some fab inspiration. I rarely post on here but feel I have to as this has inspired me to make my own book bag! It probably looks pretty amatureish but I'm pleased with it. I managed to find a Charlotte Church autobiography in a charity shop - not a classic I'll admit but it has a fab hot pink cover!! I added a couple of wooden handles which I pinched off a bag I was chucking out and a teatowel for the lining! FIngers crossed for half decent weather to go to the car boo to find some decoration of some sort for it! No Idea how to post pics on here....
Thanks :D

That is really clever - I had to look very closely to see it was a book! I can see you could have so much fun with this idea - bright colours/linings, themed for recipients to match their likes/hobbies, etc.
Brilliant, well done!

That's exactly how I'm feeling!!
I love the bag, it's fab, but what did you do with the book????!!! I think I could only do this if the book was already falling out of the hardcover and then I would have to find another way to store the book as well!

Hee hee.........I dont know if i should admit as to what i did with the book!!
Well...............Please bare in mind I saved the book from a car boot, cost me 10p and would of probuly been binned at some point......me thinks, lol
Well I used it to embellish some re-cycled beer mats for a scrapbook project see here (http://kazzellscrafts.blogspot.com/2009/09/another-up-cycled-beermat-hiccup.html), I still have lots of pages left and use a page for embellishing different craft projects usually in altered art, going to make some flowers with it too........hope I havent made your toes curl too much lol x
