Hi,
We have been experimenting with making lip balm. It has turned out looking and smelling great, but we are having trouble blending in the flavour oil.
Most of the oils are colourless so it is not apparent, but when we did the vanilla ones it has set with brown speckles of flavour oil at the bottom.
Is this anything to do with temperatures? Should we be using a hand blender maybe?
Finally, is this lip balm safe to try out if there is a concentration of flavour oil in the bottom?
Hope someone can help,
Nicky

Under diluted flavour oil tastes foul and can sting a bit so I don't recommend it ;)
Some flavour oils are water based (despite the 'Oil' name) so you do need to mix them in well...if you are making a large batch then a blender would be perfect...if it's a small amount then mix it by hand as the balm is setting or semi-hard and the 'oil' will mix in better...

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum but have a question that I hope someone can answer ?
I would like to start making lip balms and was just wondering whether there are any specific sites on the net that stock what I would need including nice packaging, flavours, odours etc and also helps with where to start.
Are there any books ?
Also interested in natural products if possible for making soaps etc.
Many thanks

Hi Nicky
When I make up small batches I blend the flavour oil into the mix with a mini whisk like they sell at Lakeland http://tinyurl.com/y92s5gp
For vanilla flavouring through why don't you try soaking a pod in some of the liquid oil you will be using, just a suggestion:)

Hi Melanie
The basic recipe I use for lip balms is
20% beeswax
25% Oil that's solid at room temperature such as coconut oil, palm, shea butter
15% Oil that's brittle at room temperature cocoabutter, palm kernal oil
40% Liquid oil such as almond, olive, avocado
You basically melt the solid fats, add in the liquid oils and pour into either tubes or tins
You can get your supplies from:Just a soap http://www.justasoap.co.uk/catalog/index.php or Bath-Bomb.com have kits http://www.bath-bomb.com/pages/lipbalmkits.html
