View Full Version : Second Coat when Glass Painting?

I've recently taken up glass painting - at the moment I'm doing very simple designs on glass tealight holders. Giving them as gifts at the moment and they're being very well received!
My question is... I tried doing a second coat on one of my tealights yesterday and was devastated when the first coat started to crack underneath. I'm using Marabu paints at the moment.
Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? Some second coats worked, and others cracked and I'm struggling to figure out why. I would absolutely LOVE it if anyone could shed some light on this for me.
Thank you so much in advance,
Holly

I used to use Pebeo and Vitrail and could never do a second coat without ruining the first. If you just want the colour to be deeper you need to apply it thicker the first time.

Aww thanks guys - I guess I'll just have to make sure the first coat is perfect! Make sure I lay it on quite thick so it doesn't look streaky.
I've taken a few photos of the stuff I've done so far but haven't uploaded them to the PC yet... will do it soon!

I found the best things to paint had flat sides so you can lay them down flat and let the paint dry. If you really want to paint curved surfaces dry speeding up the drying by holding it over a tealight, but not too close as it is flameable!

Hi Nettie,
afraid I'm not an O'Hare...it's just my online persona
Hey Holly, I am a keen glass painter and love marabu paint, I often find that if I give the glass a good wash with some washing up liquid then dry it well the paint lays better on the glass, I also like painting on acetate sheet, this is a good way to practise your liner control and if cut out you can make some lovely unique things!
I am new to this site but it seems very good, is it ok to add you as a friend so we can swap tips??

Yeah! It's great to find a fellow Marabu user! Ha ha. Yeah I always wash the glass and leave it to soak for a bit. What kind of paintbrush do you use? As I've had such differing results with different types of paintbrushes!
I currently use a '00' sable brush which is the tiniest i can find, It seems to work quite well, I have just purchased a new set of brushes from a craft shop so will lwt you know how i go!!! what kind do you find best and don't you just love marabu!
