Hi there!

I am foreigner, living in UK now. Just recently got my working visa, so until I find the job, I wanted to try to sell jewelery that I am making. Market where I started to sell it in my place a week ago is very knew, in a bit of hidden place, so we don't sell much...only two times per week..since I was there 2-3 times, I earned only 60 pounds total. I have my public liability insurance. And nothing else..I am at this point unemployed, market is just something to do until I find the job. But I still love it! My question is, do I have to register as a self employed to be able to sell on a market? I don't want to avoid a law, but if I am selling once per week and earn just to pay them for stall, I am kind of thinking...I am not familiar with law here, and to be honest, I am totally dummy for that...so please, can anyone give me advice?!

Thank you so much!:pc:

You need to contact the Inland Revenue and they will be able to clarify what you must do. I believe that you need to register as self employed.

You do need to register, even if you're not yet making any profit. You'll need to keep records of all your sales and your expenses, and submit them once a year to the Inland Revenue.

But the Inland Revenue are usually very helpful, and they should have an office that's local to you. They run courses as well, to explain how it all works.

thank you so much for your replies...but just for the curiosity :mf:, what can happen if I work in a market once-twice in a month and I don't register as a self employed?!

I am looking for a permanent job, so I know for sure that I won't continue with markets...

Thank you!!!!

If you do not register and a tax inspector comes around and find you are trading illegally you would be answerable to charges, bearing in mind that you are on a visa this could also affect the standing of the visa.

It really is not worth it as if the other traders got to know they could also land you in deep water. There is no harm in registering as self employed, keeping records etc of what you have spent and what you have sold, if you decide when you get a paid job that you want to give up, you just notify them that you have closed the business fill out a final tax return and that is the end of it.

You do need to register, even if making a loss.

I did the newly self employed course, as I believe you can always learn something new, and it was really useful, and I learnt loads.

You should get offered a course when you register as self employed, if not ask when you call to register, and the person you speak to will add you to the list.
