Have I read it or imagined it?:) Can you use embossing powder on polymer clay?

yes you can, but remember that, as it turns liquidy when heated you need to think carefully about how and where you use it!

Yes, you can certainly use embossing powders on polymer clay. I did an article for Jewelry Crafts mag once on using them to create a faux glazed look beads.

Had great fun playing. I found that putting them over already baked clay and re-baking worked best for me. Spritzing the beads with a little water helped the powder stick to the bead ready for baking. And obviously, in the case of beads where its coated all round with powder, you need to support them on a bead rack whilst baking.
