I've bought an old chair from an auction to sand down and paint for a pressie for our niece's new little baby girl. Could anyone tell me please, are there special paints I should be using? I was thinking about buying a bundle of tester pots in all different colours, as I'm thinking of doing some more furniture if I'm ok at it (cross fingers!). But then I got to thinking about in the future if she decides to have a chew on it! I've also asked about varnish in the 'Wood' section, so any help would be really great. Thank you :)
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you but just wanted to say it sounds like such a lovely idea. Hope someone comes along with the answer soon...

Acrylic paints are non-toxix, as they dry to a plastic-y sort of film. So is PVA varnish, the indoor wash-brush-with-water sort that goes on milky and dries clear.

I agree with Scorch. If you buy artists' acrylics (doesn't have to be top of the range) you'll get a really good colour choice. Try http://www.jacksonsart.co.uk or http://www.artsupplies.co.uk
The Amsterdam acrylics in Jacksons is good, but the best I'd say would be the Liqutex soft body range. I think both of the above do them, but the second one def does. They seem expensive (esp if you are comparing them to tester pots) but they go a very long way, they are high in pigment for the thickness.
Use an acrylic varnish like Scorch says. It'll go on milky but will dry clear.
You could always check what individual manufacturers say on their websites.
Happy painting! :)

So do cheapo bookstores like Book World and such... sometimes top quality and VERY cheap. Waterbased varnish you can get in DIY shops or Wilkinson's

You might like to look at these (http://www.ecosorganicpaints.com/) - especially if you plan on selling your furniture.. I am sure it is not cheap, but the paint itself might be a good selling point for "yummy mummy" types...
