Good morning o chefs! ;)

I need a bit of help.... I want to make my son a cake for his birthday today and need pointing at some yummy recipes. His only request is for butter cream icing.....

Any ideas?

Any basic cake recipe will be ok. I usually weigh the eggs (in their shells) and the use the same amount for flour, butter and sugar. I also much prefer buttercream to icing.
As for designs, some of the most simple things can look good but it depends on the age of the child. I have made several different ones for my two when they were little. Cover the cake completely and then put smarties on top. It looks really cheerful. You can make a hedgehog by shaping a cake into a teardrop - or cooking in an oval dish - and the adding chocolate buttons sticking out for the spines. A tractor - with waggon wheels and marshmallow cakes for the wheels and wafer biscuits for the windows. A Horse's head - oval cake for the head and a square with top two corners cut off for the neck, ears are made with the cut off bits. Liquorice for the harness and a rosette with the age on.
I even made a garfield cat with a traced paper face )put it on at the last minute as it will soak up the fat) and stripes of brown buttercream over orange.

Using the delicious recipe provided, I made this! :D Far too much icing and the little coloured 'boobs' are flavoured.... all his mates were really impressed! ;)

For a younger child - (I am probably not going to explain this very well)

Take a vicky sandwich - just one cake - slice off top of circle - cut that piece in half - then invert on top - it will then look like a cat with sticky up ears:)

Dead easy.

I remember my Dad's 40th Birthday party...... my brother (approx 8 at the time) asked my Dad why he had wanted pink mountains on his cake :mummy::mummy:
I can still picture the 'nipples' now! (I bet that gets blanked out!)
