When you sew the pattern on to a knitted item following the stitches so it looks like you have knitted it in. I think its french something and its on the tip of my tongue!

Oh I know exactly what you mean but I can't think of it either!
ETA: "Additional patterns can be made on the surface of the knitted fabric using embroidery; if the embroidery resembles knitting, it is often called Swiss darning." according to Wikipedia ("http://en.wikipedia.org/)

I was going to tell you it was swiss darning but someone beat me to it. I think what you were thinking of was a french knot!!
