hi, first apologies for any breach of forum 'etiquette'. I am new & struggling to work this-what i really need is a weekend free and no soap waiting to trace so that i can concentrate. My question is does anyone have any views or knowledge on using home grown herbs etc in bath & body products. I have the certs and all the msds's but if I now want to use my homegrown lemon balm etc can I? Can I do my owm MSDS on it? any views?

I've no direct expereince re using homegrown herbs but when I asked my assessor what to do about an MSDS for honey from a small local beekeeper his answer was "Write one" !
When you look at an MSDS it's mainly to do with handling and carting the stuff in bulk. I don't think botanicals have CAS and INECsnumbers (but can check a botanical from a soapmaking supllier to see - just looked none of those numbers).
There was a statemnet going round some of the soap forums about a couple of years ago that botanicals didn't need an MSDS - don't know if that's a fact though.
You'd need to be certain that your homegrown herbs are free of pesticides and other nasties, if you're near a road they may have absorbed lead or something from traffic exhaust fumes.

Soap queen, pm me if you don't get an answer. I know a lady who has the answer but I don't want to bother her if the craft members can give it to you here.
