I read and advertise in creative scrapbooking, scrapbooking inspirations, I honestly think that you must reconsider advertising in magazines unless you can do a trial to test the water of your exact market. I have been advertising with not much success. A few locals who wanted to join my workshops but other than that not many sales or site traffic. I think this is because the craft market is so saturated with not enough new crafters to fill in the gaps. What do you think

Hi
I am advertising in Card Making and Papercraft, but I read this mag before I started adverts. As I am a subscriber I now get two copies every month which is entertaining!!
I have had some increasse in hits to my site and a few extra sales that I can attribute to the ad but I have just about covered the cost of the ad no more. But I am looking at it that I never throw away my craft magazines and do go back and look for ads for things I want months later so maybe these dripping sales will keep coming!
Or maybe I am just kidding myself!!

Thought some of the others were more like comics to be honest and was very disappointed by the card ideas mainly as ive been doing these the klongest. Am i still 8 years old? no? so why do they talk to me like i am! rant rant rant!! (no offence to anyone that deos liek them) I did see the cover of Quick and Crafty this month and thought it looked good but didnt have enough cash at the time.........might giev that one a go next tho. :) Im a sucker for anythign that says its quick and easy - so much to learn, so little time!!:D

I only really used to get two mags, Crafts Beautiful and Quick and Crafty, mainly for the projects because they have a really good variety and also some good reads in there too for when you're all crafted out!!!! :)
I recently bought Lets Make Cards more as a one off just to be nosy because it came in a bag with lots of freebies (Well i inteded for it to be a one off) but I think I've got hooked in again! Although it is just card makign it's got such a good variety and shows u how to do different techniques as well and stuff which I think it good because I cant always do the fancier stuff just from the project instructions.
I used to get a cross stitch mag years ago but then stopped because I got bored of actual cross stitch I dont actually have the patience anymore!

I have bought a few different card making mags. The best one for me is 'The complete card making hand book' by Practical Publishing (who are also responsible for Simply stamping, the scrapbook mag, simply cards and papercraft etc). This Mag is published on a quarterly basis, it's full of hints and tips. It's also a bit of a tutorial with there 'how to' pages on a variety of different techniques. It has between 150-200 pages and costs about £7.99. It's suppose to be exclusive to WHSmith but you get a better deal on there website. I'm thinking of advertising in here because it's more of a reference mag which people will keep and use more than a standard mag, therefore your advert hangs around there workspace istead of the bottom of a drawer.

I want to look at a copy, and can't find any news agent that sells it in my area.
I've found it online, but I really don't want a subscription.......it's so annoying. Might have to take a trip to Bristol or somewhere just to track down a copy.
I want it, primarily to find out about advertising for the Craft Fairs. Might ask if our little newsagent can order it for me.

I haven't bought a craft magazine before but had a look for some today and found it quite a task (at which I failed!). Found quite a few on cross stitch, card making and scrapbooking but nothing on general crafts or mosaics (although didn't expect to find any!). Do you find you have to order magazines on general crafts or am I not looking hard enough? Can anyone recommend a good magazine for crafts in general?
Thank you!!!

Onething that puts me off buying a magazine is when its wrapped up in a plastic bag so you can't have a quick flick through to see which one might suit that month. Because they often come with some sort of free tat the magazine publishers feel the need for this excess packaging! Whats wrong with a bit of sellotape holding the "free gift" in place?
I'd say the best selection of magazines is always in Borders... I see so many there that you just can't buy in most newsagents.

Hi. I've been reading through this thread and notice that a number of you advertise in various mags. I was just wondering how much it costs to advertise in the magazines? I'm thinking of doing a spot of advertising myself and am interested to know what the costs are and whether it's worthwhile?
Thanks :)

I enquired with cards made easy and it can range from £1055 for a full page to £15 for an ad in the classifieds. The prices go down if you commit to a few adverts.
Hope this helps.

What magazines would you recommend advertising in? Do people advertise their crafts as well as selling supplies and is this a good way of selling them?
icecreamgirl
11-04-2007, 08:54 AM
I read a few craft magazines and do use the adverts in the directories to find new suppliers.
I don't think i've ever noticed people advertising their products this way though - unless it's an article about the seller/shop.
My opinion (for what it's worth) is that a craft magazine isn't the best place to advertise your finished product simply because the people who read these magazines are generally crafters themselves who are more likely to think - 'that's nice i'll have a go at making that' rather than 'that's nice i'll buy that'
Just my humble opinion......

Yes I read Crafts Beautiful, Quick & Crafty and occasionally get Lets Make Cards. I used to get a few of the knitting magazines but never saw any patterns that I like so cancelled my subscription.
I like Crafts Beautiful & QC because they have lots of projects that are quite modern and not boring, and also have a good website with free downloads and mega competitions. I'm a sucker for free stuff what can I say.

There's also another UK beading mag called 'Beads & Beyond' magazine which you can get from WH Smiths amongst others (our local 'costcutter' gets it in too & I think you can ask most newsagents to stock a particular mag for you). I also notice many of the established 'craft' magazines are introducing bead articles & projects now too.

Looking to do some more advertising for both this forum and the craft directory...
So .. You crafty people what you reading ?
I got the other half a subscription to Simply Knitting recently. After some investigation in the various newsagents around here - limited selection of dedicated knitting magazines (on the shelves in Jersey anyway!) - it seemed to be the most interesting, and useful to her (she's only a beginner).
They also have some nice give-aways! :D
Incase anyone is interested - the publisher run a website: http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/ where they offer a bit of a discount on subscriptions to mags over a wide range of topics - think there are a fair few craft ones in there too!
Must admit I haven't personally read it cover to cover, but I've skimmed through, and it seems like quite a good un.

Just found this thread - I love magazines - well thats an understatement really - I have a serious addiction to them. Have to stop myself buying every one on the shelves!
My favourites though - I have a subscription to Embroidery - loads of inspiration and ideas for all things textile. Stitches is good too.
I am about to subscibe to Selvedge - so beautiful - even the adverts are wonderful.
Fiberarts and Surface Design are both lovely american ones that I buy when I find them - Borders is good for magazines particularly unusual or foreign ones.
I just wish I could get to Japan - they have some amazing publications.
Marie Claire Idees is another great one - can't often get it though - maybe I should get a penfriend :)

Over the past 30plus years I've gained a huge reference library of books and mags mainly needlework, of all kinds, knitting, general crafting, flower arranging, etc etc
I only guy New stitches mag now I used to subscribe to Creative Stitches untill it stop publication.
Most of what I see now a days is either reproductions from the past or cutie's disney flowery fairy stuff that really doesn't interest me.
Also I much prefer to design my own things than copy someone else's.
Anyone who subscribes to, has contributed to, or purchases, or has, or has had any dealings with, any one of Sew Hip. Simply Beautiful, Modern Quilting, Handmade Living, Handmade Fashion, Inside Crochet, Knit Magazine/Yarnwise (previously Yarn Forward) might like to know that the publishers which owns them, All Craft Media, went into liquidation today, less than 12mo after rising as a phoenix co from the liquidation of KAL Media in June last year, which itself was formed after an online knit mag/club - Magknits - closed without notice.
The director of KAL was one Kerrie Allman; the director of ACM her husband, and the new company, called Handmade Living Ltd which has arisen from the ashes of KAL and which has 'taken over' the Handmade Living title has as its director Ms Allman's father ...
I urge anyone considering buying from, subscribing to or doing business in any way with any publisher to check out their credentials first before parting with money, submissions, photos, crafted items or their time for an interview.
The knit/crochet world has been aware of this company/ies and the directors' shonky business practices for some time. It seems they might be looking to now concentrate on the handicraft/shabby chic/home-made look that is currently so popular, and sewing in particular.
Just to correct myself - All Craft Media (ACM) have gone into Administration, not Liquidation; there is a difference.
Anybody who is owed money or goods, or intangible goods such as advertising, with them contract should contact the Administrator to make sure they are listed as a creditor. Do not rely on him to contact you as details may not be complete.

I subscribe to Threads Magazine - it is published in the US but has great articles on all things sewing.
I love it. the only publication I have ever read cover to cover.
My daughter buys me the subscription to Parchment Craft magazine by Magmaker.
I really look forward to it arriving every month.
There are usually patterns for every level and most of them are gorgeous.
Sometimes I buy DoCrafts Creativity magazine as well.
