bead and button... american publication and craft beautiful (only since I started advertising in it) and will probably start reading quick and crafty as my advert is now going in there too!
I would love to read a british beading magazine.... maybe one day someone will actually get round to publishing one!!

I read and advertise in creative scrapbooking, scrapbooking inspirations, I honestly think that you must reconsider advertising in magazines unless you can do a trial to test the water of your exact market. I have been advertising with not much success. A few locals who wanted to join my workshops but other than that not many sales or site traffic. I think this is because the craft market is so saturated with not enough new crafters to fill in the gaps. What do you think

Hi
I am advertising in Card Making and Papercraft, but I read this mag before I started adverts. As I am a subscriber I now get two copies every month which is entertaining!!
I have had some increasse in hits to my site and a few extra sales that I can attribute to the ad but I have just about covered the cost of the ad no more. But I am looking at it that I never throw away my craft magazines and do go back and look for ads for things I want months later so maybe these dripping sales will keep coming!
Or maybe I am just kidding myself!!

I tryed a few as im new to making stuff and thought i could do with learning some tips but so far i only really like crafts beautiful - love all the ideas but its all a bti tricky for em because im not very good eyt!!

Thought some of the others were more like comics to be honest and was very disappointed by the card ideas mainly as ive been doing these the klongest. Am i still 8 years old? no? so why do they talk to me like i am! rant rant rant!! (no offence to anyone that deos liek them) I did see the cover of Quick and Crafty this month and thought it looked good but didnt have enough cash at the time.........might giev that one a go next tho. :) Im a sucker for anythign that says its quick and easy - so much to learn, so little time!!:D

Hi
I just love quick and crafty, it has all sorts of quick easy projects from card making to home decorations. My 11 year grabs it as soon as it arrives and starts making. I like it so much I now advertise my site and get lots of new customers from it.

I only really used to get two mags, Crafts Beautiful and Quick and Crafty, mainly for the projects because they have a really good variety and also some good reads in there too for when you're all crafted out!!!! :)

I recently bought Lets Make Cards more as a one off just to be nosy because it came in a bag with lots of freebies (Well i inteded for it to be a one off) but I think I've got hooked in again! Although it is just card makign it's got such a good variety and shows u how to do different techniques as well and stuff which I think it good because I cant always do the fancier stuff just from the project instructions.

I used to get a cross stitch mag years ago but then stopped because I got bored of actual cross stitch I dont actually have the patience anymore!

I don't read any either. I used to take The Spinners, Weavers and Dyers mag but it got so expensive and thin! The ones that you get in the supermarkets I don't like much.

My favourite is Quick & Crafty as it covers a selection of crafts - it is young and modern and lots of things can be done quickly which suits me - no patience!!!

I am also enjoying Lets Make Cards - it is on it's third issue and it has lots of free card making goodies with each issue - it is a bit expensive (£7) but you can make lots of cards out of the freebies.

I have bought a few different card making mags. The best one for me is 'The complete card making hand book' by Practical Publishing (who are also responsible for Simply stamping, the scrapbook mag, simply cards and papercraft etc). This Mag is published on a quarterly basis, it's full of hints and tips. It's also a bit of a tutorial with there 'how to' pages on a variety of different techniques. It has between 150-200 pages and costs about £7.99. It's suppose to be exclusive to WHSmith but you get a better deal on there website. I'm thinking of advertising in here because it's more of a reference mag which people will keep and use more than a standard mag, therefore your advert hangs around there workspace istead of the bottom of a drawer.

I've just purchased the first two copies of the new Craft magazine from the states.

It covers all sorts of crafts and has some really quirky articles! Even my other half, a non-crafting person, has been reading them!

I want to look at a copy, and can't find any news agent that sells it in my area.

I've found it online, but I really don't want a subscription.......it's so annoying. Might have to take a trip to Bristol or somewhere just to track down a copy.

I want it, primarily to find out about advertising for the Craft Fairs. Might ask if our little newsagent can order it for me.

I haven't bought a craft magazine before but had a look for some today and found it quite a task (at which I failed!). Found quite a few on cross stitch, card making and scrapbooking but nothing on general crafts or mosaics (although didn't expect to find any!). Do you find you have to order magazines on general crafts or am I not looking hard enough? Can anyone recommend a good magazine for crafts in general?

Thank you!!!

Onething that puts me off buying a magazine is when its wrapped up in a plastic bag so you can't have a quick flick through to see which one might suit that month. Because they often come with some sort of free tat the magazine publishers feel the need for this excess packaging! Whats wrong with a bit of sellotape holding the "free gift" in place?

I'd say the best selection of magazines is always in Borders... I see so many there that you just can't buy in most newsagents.

Hi. I've been reading through this thread and notice that a number of you advertise in various mags. I was just wondering how much it costs to advertise in the magazines? I'm thinking of doing a spot of advertising myself and am interested to know what the costs are and whether it's worthwhile?

Thanks :)

I enquired with cards made easy and it can range from £1055 for a full page to £15 for an ad in the classifieds. The prices go down if you commit to a few adverts.

Hope this helps.

What magazines would you recommend advertising in? Do people advertise their crafts as well as selling supplies and is this a good way of selling them?

icecreamgirl
11-04-2007, 07:54 AM
I read a few craft magazines and do use the adverts in the directories to find new suppliers.
I don't think i've ever noticed people advertising their products this way though - unless it's an article about the seller/shop.
My opinion (for what it's worth) is that a craft magazine isn't the best place to advertise your finished product simply because the people who read these magazines are generally crafters themselves who are more likely to think - 'that's nice i'll have a go at making that' rather than 'that's nice i'll buy that'
Just my humble opinion......

Thanks Heather. Funnily enough I got an email from Crafts Beautiful mag a couple of days ago saying they were running a needle-felting article and wondered whether I might be interested in placing an advert alongside it. I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out costs etc.

Hi everyone, a friend of mine has got me into card making and I must say I'm really enjoying it, she swears by cardmaking & papercraft as she loves the free gifts and creative ideas. I have just subscribed online and was really impressed to find that I could download a number of card making ideas straight away. The ideas are fab and I can't wait to receive my first issue. I used to subscribe to CSC and Cross Stitcher but to be honest I think they've all gone a bit downhill lately - the only one I read now is Q&E Stitch & Craft, the free gifts are better quality and there are some great projects.

I think the UK produces some really interesting craft mags. CRAFTS from the Crafts Council is one of the best, Crafts Beautiful is also the best of the aceville publications and of course there is Craft Caboodle.

Yes I read Crafts Beautiful, Quick & Crafty and occasionally get Lets Make Cards. I used to get a few of the knitting magazines but never saw any patterns that I like so cancelled my subscription.

I like Crafts Beautiful & QC because they have lots of projects that are quite modern and not boring, and also have a good website with free downloads and mega competitions. I'm a sucker for free stuff what can I say.

I was toying with the idea of getting some scrapbook mags for a while but I'm not sure if they're worth it, anyone got any good recommendations?

i just bought cloth.paper.scissors it's a US magazine and has altered art - 3d collage - textile art - mixed media, it's really great and very different.
i've been looking for a new mag for ages as i've been buying CRAFTSbeautiful purely out of habit for years but feeling totally uninspired by it now and i've been mourning the loss of scrapbooking answers which i LOVED.
