View Full Version : What Once Were Kitchen Curtains ..

I took down the old kitchen curtains and stashed them away in the airing cupboard when we moved in. Yesterday on a whim I pulled out a pattern, my sewing machine and started weilding the scissors!

An hour and a half later and voila!

It was meant to have sleeves, but I didn't have enough fabric. Maybe I should have done a proper Scarlet O'Hara and used the curtain frills I removed and attached them to the bottom or made a hat :D

Thank you! Yes, a proper bit of make do and mend there! A good old bit of WWII attitude never hurts anyone!

That is brilliant, you would never guess it used to be curtains!!!!

Very pretty, well done. I'm all for the WWII attitude of making something from something else (if only I had the imagination for it!)

When my Mum first got her sewing machine, she used to buy a length of fabric from the market on the way home on a friday and run up a pleated skirt (machine had a special pleater fitted!) to wear the same night.. seeing your dress made me think about all the clothes she used to make..

It's so much easier for women, you can make something snazzy relatively easily compared to clothes for men..

Thank you everyone!

Diane - I was a little worried at first that it might look like I was wearing curtains! My husband assures me it doesn't!

sparkysdad - I bet your mum looked the bees knees! Yes, I think women do have it easier.

It's a wonderful dress. I wish I could sew like you.. I had a few classes and it was so hard, now I really admire people that can do it!

What a great use of the curtains, and unlike some clothes in the shops, you'd never even know! What a great way to get a unique dress :)

How clever of you, it looks lovely :)

Great pattern for a cool spring dress. Definitely doesn't look like you're wearing curtains.

Just like in the Sound of Music :D

Awww thank you everyone! I'm blushing now, hehe!

Doing this has really inspired me to start something new, but alas I have no curtains left ;) I did make a couple of dresses from seventies duvet covers once though! I shall start trawling the charity shops now I think!

WOW - that dress is so fabulous I wish I was as talented
but alas there are three reasons a similar attempt would fail...
1) I can't sew or use a machine - but there's always learning something new :)
2) My figure is considerably more padded - hmmm perhaps bigger curtains :p
3) Oh yes the final (all important) reason - we have slatted blinds!! Ouch! :D

As my talent is so limited and they're too small for me, shall I send you the blinds now?
I'm thinking catwalk chic combined with a retro blade runner feel....
Or perhaps not, lol

Can't wait to see what fabric you pick up at the Charity Shop, I love seeing reclaimed chic!

A slated blind might make an interesting skirt!
