I'd like to have a go at making soaps, lip balms etc as a school fundraiser. Could anyone point me in the direction of good book that could give me some pointers - or alternatively if anyone knows of a website or two that could help, any personal recipes that work etc I would be really grateful.
Cheers, debby :jippie:

Unfortunately you need to have a Safety Assessment and Certificate from a cosmetic chemist for your recipes (yes -even Melt and Pour soaps) or similar before you can make and sell soaps and toiletries and this would cost £300 or more for the range you're thinking of.
Even a straight forwards lip-balm assessment/certificate from Gracefruit costs £75
"Our easy-to-follow formulas are based our best-selling products and incorporate fresh ingredients.
Once purchased, we will send over a questionnaire asking you to outline your manufacturing and storage procedures. Once we've received this document back from you, we will email your assessment documents in .pdf format within seven days."

I have to agree with ElaineJ -
One cannot make any concoction for the skin without the safety assessment- could not only be illegal, but leave you wide open for any litigation.
Speak with your local TS officer for more info/advice.

Crikey - Didn't realise it would be quite the can of worms it seems to be! So much for brainstorm sessions in the staffroom; We'll probably make greetings cards instead!
Thanks for the info, debby :)
