Hi I am interested in making candles and have looked into it and would really like to try it. I am a qualified nail technician and I use paraffin wax for manicures. I wondered if it is the same wax used in candle making as they have some lovely scents. I don't think they have stearin in them so would it be ok if I added stearin so I could the paraffin wax for candle making as well as manicures.

Hi,
I must admit I am not a user of paraffin wax or know the constitution of manicure wax. As I understand, paraffin wax is used because it can be heated to high temperatures and can help absorption into the skin (good ole wiki!!!).
I would suggest you check exactly what is in the wax via the supplier or manufacturer as certain additives may be OK for one use but not compatible for candles/burning. Whoever makes it should be able to tell you what it can and cannot be used for. Also, I would have thought that buying specialty wax could prove quite expensive in comparison to bulk buying as there are more 'middle men' to go through to make their share of profits.
My suggestion would be to buy the seperate constituents and mix them yourself where you have full control and knowledge of exactly what is going in and at what %age.

I use paraffin wax a lot for my candles. What you will probably find is that wax for manicures probably has a very low melting point so that you don't burn your client. This would be no good for candle making as it would burn off far too fast.
I agree with Oddsox you can check with your supplier with what you have but you will be far cheaper getting a bag of bog standard candle making paraffin wax from a candle making supplier it would save you on delivery too as you can get all the wax, additives, wick and scent you need in the one place.

...... approx £3.50 for a kilo of soy wax I pay - would definitley avoid using the wax you have if nothing else for costs. Maybe try a starter kit which includes some good fragrances!!

I've heard about manicure wax, a friend used to have it to help her arthritis too I think, would that be right? Can it be used on other parts of the body - knees, feet, hips for example? I'm not being funny honestly, I wouldn't mind trying it myself and just wondered Sorry to divert the thread.Facebook page, Cottage Charms & Cards: http://www.facebook.com/update_secur...20677888001883

Hi. I use both type of waxes in my work and hobby. Spa wax (manicure wax) can be used on various parts of the body. It is a complety different type of paraffin wax and isn't suitable for use in candle making. As others have said, it's more expensive than candle wax anyway so wouldn't be cost effective to try it in candles. In the same way, you should never use candle wax for wax manicures etc.
