Dyeing string

Has anyone ever dyed string? Did it work? Do you think it will work? Are the little round thingys of dye that you can buy cold water dye? I like the idea of the dyes that you put in the washing machine but think that the string might end up down the holes and the washing will be dyed forever!
Any advice would be much appreciated

you could always put the string into a muslin bag or similar and then put it into a machine!
