Hi,

I have been asked to make some stud earrings. I have not made any before just dangly ones.

It it best to buy the pegs and then half drilled beads?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Why half drilled beads?The only studs ive seen have the bit that goes through the ear then a flat plate area on one end to stick things on, dunno if half drilled beads are a benefit.

I think using earrings with a flat plate with a peg and put the half drilled bead on makes it more secure than just sticking it on.

Not really sure, need some guidence!

Yes I would use half drilled.
as You say they are more secure.

I do my studs differently than half drilled beads or sticking cabachons onto a pad and it's more cost effective.

I'll try and describe:-

Get some 0.8mm gauge Sterling Silver round wire and thread a couple of beads on (I usually use 6 or 8mm ), bring one bead up to the tip of the wire and bend the wire over and start going around the bead from the outside coming into the middle, when you've done 3 or 4 complete turns on the bead you bring the wire over to the middle of the bead and bend the wire so it looks like a post, cut to earpost length and do the other bead the same way. When you have made them both you use your wire cutters and create a groove around the 'post' for the clutch (bought seperately) and viola!! you have a pair of studs from a normal string of beads without the cost of single half drilled beads.

I think I've added an attachment to show what I mean. Yeah I did!!!

I forgot to mention that I use Half Hard temper and finish them off in a tumbler to work harden more. It can get quite sore on the fingers after you've done a few but yes! they are cute and very cost effective. I sell lots at the fairs.

For glueing I would absolutely recommend Devcon 5 minute epoxy (http://www.kernowcraft.com/products/silversmithing-and-tools/sundries/5-minute-epoxy-C20/)as it is so quick, super super strong and easy to mix. We use it here in the workshop at Kernowcraft and our jeweller who does the setting service thinks it is the best glue. We also have gs hypo cement (http://www.kernowcraft.com/products/bead-stringing/bead-stringing-tools-and-accessories/g-s-hypo-cement-glue-C179/)which always seems to be popular too, and lots of people on the forum recommend it, though personally I also prefer the epoxy and think it is stronger too.
