Ok so I have a sandwich shop, i make all the cakes, all the usual , lemon sponges, chocolate, muffins, victoria sponge, healthy all bran, i even boast of my new found talent (sometimes);)........ but my wonderful sister told her friend that I can make any kind of cake, so her friend asked me to make her a sponge bob square pants birthday cake for her 5 year old son..... of course i can never say no and i believe my first attempt will be perfect....:confused:
I told her I would just charge her cost as I have never even iced a cake .. I got a topper from ebay, so my thinking is all i have to do is ice a cake and stick on the topper....
Well my first mistake was not practising:D, i hadn't got white icing (god only knows why i didn't get any), but i thought to myself sponge bob, he is yellow, i will do yellow icing, not enough yellow icing so i mised it with green, oh yes i iced the cake a nice lime green colour, there were a few cracks, a few heated words with the icing for not doing as i was expecting it to do, not quite enought for my over large blooming cake!!!, as the night wore on and i was getting crosser and crosser I used a buttercream edging of course this would be chocolate that i used for the cake... so now the cake is lime green with a chocolate border. I put the icing topper on so at least there is a picture of sponge bob. In the morning when I had decided it wasn't as bad as i had originally thought i went back to work, only problem now is i only have red or black icing left. i covered the ends of the cake with red icing.... mmmmm yummy a lime green and red cake with sponge bob on it...:D Sharon bless her said the cake was much better than she was expecting her son adored it and everything turned out well. I now have another 2 orders for novelty cakes, I must be mad, I make sure I tell them they may not be perfect and to get in quick while i'm still practising and i only charge accordingly ... When I can work out how to put pics on here I may even have the courage you show everyone one, but for now i'm happy that i can keep on practising .

Well done, and at least the birthday boy loved it.
I think your next plan should be to get in loads more white and coloured icing so you won't get caught out.
I think there is money to be made with fancy cakes, a friend had a christening cake made, 18" square chocolate cake with white fondant icing, small piped edging round the top and bottom, a few fabric flowers and name/date etc in the middle and they charged £42. !!

Yes definately an area I would like to get into especially in these credit crunching times. Cake prices are crazy, although now having done one albeit icing and nothing too fancy, I can see where all the hard work is:D

Well done for giving it a go. Sounds like you did a good job, and the 5 year old was happy so that's th most important thing. I probably would have made a square cake and then iced it yellow and then made an icing mouth and shorts for it. Get those colours back in stock so you can make more novelty cakes. Shame there isn't a photo for us to look at!

it sounds vile.. perfect for an under 10 ! :mf::mf:
I only make cakes for home, and I tend to ice fruitcakes so they last a little longer.. I got bored so I started adding "bits" to them, and one or two have quite impressed me.. The flower one was best, but got eaten before I got round to taking a pic

thank you for saying nice things though :D I don't claim to be a cake decorator, just bored of the same old round plain cake.. I just use the scraps of roll out icing to make decorations with for my own pleasure :)

Yes! Practise does make perfect!
I set my own cake business up 2 years ago after following my dream!
I have now had the priviledge to make cakes for TV stars!!!!
Yes - their is money in it - but - to get perfection takes time & on an hourly rate!!! you actually dont make much money! BUT when you enjoy it as much as I do, then to see people faces when they receive their cakes is just fab!
Keep it up!

I made my little boy a fire engine cake for his 4th on Saturday. I started making the cake on Thursday afternoon and finished it on Friday night. I really enjoyed the whole process and my little boy loved his cake.

Birthday Cake:
You will need
* long chocolate swiss roll
* buttercream
* sweets of your choice
* toys or models
Cut one end off the swiss roll at a forty-five degree angle and position it to form the peak of the one. Cut a piece from the other end, longer than the cake is wide. Use this to form the base of the one.
Cover the whole cake in buttercream using a pallette knife. We've used white buttercream, but you can use whatever colour you like.

It's great you are enjoying your new talent, there are hundreds of websites with cake projects and step by step instructions on anything to how to coat a cake to making wired flowers. Just google "Cake Decorating" or "Sugarcraft" some of the suppliers have fact sheets on how to use equipment try FMM's website loads on there.
How about going to a class near you, most adult education (usually run by the local council) will have classes or your local FE college often run vocational courses, neither is usually very expensive. Where I teach it is £80 for a 10 week 2hrs a week course. So may be well worth the money if you want to expand your business. The main point is to have fun and enjoy your new found talent.

£42 for an 18" cake is a bargain. Bespoke cakes are expensive as there is a lot of time taken and skills learn involved in making these cakes. If you broke the cake down the ingredients cost, hourly rate you will find the decorator wasnt making much at all on the cakes. Most do it because they love it and a lucky few manage to get big bucks for theirs and earn a decent living, most work at other jobs and decorate cakes on the side as they could never earn a proper living from it.
