I'm sorry, I don't know the technical name for wood things, but can you pyro an image from a photo onto wood?

I'm thinking a family portrait put onto wood?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking... do you mean other than tracing/drawing the portrait onto the wood and burning the design to finish it with pyrography?

This is an image that I created from a photograph. I traced the picture of my wife's face and then created the rest of the 'fantasy' clothing freehand from scratch. I know that Nader has done several portraits from photographs as well, I'm sure that he probably works in a similar way.

Yes thanks - that's exactly what I meant - I'm thinking of getting something done for my Husband's 30th. Might come back to you :)

She'll be even more pleased when I get round to finishing the rest of the design... it's over a metre high and I haven't done the rest yet. You know what it's like when you have crafty business stuff to do all the time, your own personal items sometimes get put on the back burner. I'm going to start working on it when I need to relax a little, I think... I can use it as a piece of enjoyment with no pressure from a customer etc.

I can highly recommend Si's pyrography work... we had a couple of commission pieces from him for Christmas presents and the recipients were delighted with the quality of his work. And he has recently created a memorial plaque for my son. His work is second to none and I would definitely recommend him for that 'something special' ;)

In reply to a previous comment, the majority of my work is done freehand, sometimes sketched on first lightly in pencil before permanently burning it on, usually using a photgraph as reference when working on a portrait.

Seeing as a couple of people were posting their wood based portrait work, i thought id add a couple more examples,
This was one of my first portraits on wood, and still one of my favourites that ive done:

This piece was a commissioned family portrait, both pieces were done on Birch:
