I finlly got off my botty and bought an expensive soldering iron.
My other cheap ones always go cup-put, the recent one lasted about 2 weeks!!and I couldnt get replacemrnt tips so I had to keep buying new ones at 8 a go.
With vat and postage it cost 75(!!!) but Im hoping itl last a while.
Now I can get on with things.

Has anybody else tried soldering?

ref black tips; use sand paper, rub all the black off, back to nice shinny metal. dip the hot tip in your flux andcoat it with solder, wipe with a damp sponge and bingo new usable tip regards wufer

seahorse hi no sand paper is ok. What you are trying to do is to get the tip back to "as new" so you have to get all the black off right back to bright metal ,then flux it solder it and lightely rub the tip on a damp spung. That will do the trick. I use large irons and i have to use a file to get the black off so you"ll be ok. By the way thank you for the singer site; just what i wanted.. regards wufer
