I have some gorgeous sirdar chunky yarn and have crocheted myself a beret. Now I want to do a muffler to match - basically just a short scarf joined at the ends that pulls over the head and sits on the neck. I've seen knitted versions, but not a crocheted one. Can anyone tell me how best to start it off - ie whether it is best to crochet it in a round or lengthways. Thanks!:)

Personally, I'd do it in vertical rows, working into the back loops, thereby creating a kind of rib effect. You could join the ends to make a pull-on or fasten it with big chunky buttons.

Be sure to post a picture when you're done :D

Yeah, I think I would work it in rows in one rectangular piece & use some buttons (or how about a crochet flower?) to fasten it. I think it would look fantastic. Can you recommend a particular beret pattern? I would really like to make one for myself (if I ever get the chance...).

I saw this one on craft juice and thought how beautiful is this. It looks knitted though. http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_430xN.43063561.jpg

Thanks for the replies!
This is the beret pattern I used: http://charmedknits.blogspot.com/2007/07/instructions-for-crochet-beret.html

I've joined the waiting list for Revelry! :o Only 6,600 in the queue ahead of me! :mf:

While browsing I found this muffler pattern, so am giving it a try:

Love the idea of the twist in the scarf! Will let you know how I get on (it's growing very quickly!) At least with crochet it is easy to undo and start again if you don't like the end result :D

That is lovely isn't it? It is knitted, although something similar could be done in crochet - I'd need a bit more practice (and patience) first! :p

Now that is really gorgeous crochet!

Well I finished my muffler - ran out of wool, so did a fancy edge in some toning mohair, then did the same around the edge of the beret! :p

It's way from the neatest crochet i've seen, but at least it's usable, and it's most definitely unique! :mf:

Excuse the dodgy, out of focus self portrait - wanted to show what it looks like on (so you can tell me if I look like a clown or not!) It looks better on the pot dog though ;)

Looks great Cathy - although not sure about the expression on your face!! - amazing how different people look with a hat on. Are you going to do those to sell? I think they would go well.

I love them! I really like your choice of yarn too.

Thanks all!
Cynthia, that expression was the better one - the other had me squinting to look forwards into the mirror but also trying to squint sideways to see where the camera was! Scary! :o ;)
