I heard yesterday that the craft fair I'm working on during the build up to christmas should NOT be charging VAT - something to do with it not being 'a permanent dwelling' (I think that's what he said?).

Can anyone shed a bit more light on this, please?

Cheers!

Never heard that one before. Think your best option is the revenue web site, its fairly easy to follow these days

Not sure I understand what you mean, but I thought it'd depend on whether the company that runs the fair is VAT reg or not

Not sure about that one either but best to find out from IR. Not sure it has to do with premises, rather than their VAT status. The premises owner would surely charge them VAT and they in turn would charge you VAT for a service they are supplying. Would depend on their VAT status I suppose. If you're VAT registered you can reclaim it on your VAT Return.

Don't take my word - check it out.

Thanks for the advice, good peeps!

I've just been told that it's not VAT exempt but zero rated - so although it's 'vat'able, the rate of VAT is 0%

Apparently lots of crafters get charge VAT and happily pay it, knowing no difference. I'm glad I found out as I have just saved myself £230 in vat :)

Once I have clarification on this I'll let you know exactly why & how - I think i's to do with the type of 'accommodation'.

Thanks again.

Be lucky!
