After receiving Woodtattoos commision im just wondering what makes a good pyrographer.

Is it mostly art abilities? Being able to draw and have a steady hand?

Im just wondering as it looks like fun but my drawing abilities are a little...well.....pants lol! :D

I think a leaning towards arson may help. ;)

I'm still learning pyrography, my artistic skills are virtually zero!
at the moment I'm doing plaques with a lot of wording rather than artwork

I am laughing as I'm doing a 'teach your children literacy and numeracy' course, and this week we had to create something to interact with children to do with a nursery rhyme. I used felts to put incy wincy spider on a piece of card, with rain and a sun, and I looked at what the others in the class had done - they were so fab. I looked at mine and was suitably embarressed as I figured it looked like my 3 yr old had made it. Bless her though, she liked it and asked for it on her bedroom wall - but I figure if anyone asks I'm gonna say she made it :D

it's all a far cry from my past life as a lawyer! but I'm happy :)

Blimey, does that mean I fall into the category of "good pyrographer"? I've been promoted!

It is possible to get good results in pyrography with stencils and tracing... you don't have to work freehand and draw everything from scratch. I use roughly 50/50 in terms of my pyrography designs. I think that there are a lot of skills which are invaluable... attention to detail, the ubiquitous steady hand, a good eye for tone and shade and the ability not to scream when you put a hot iron on your finger...

I'm a firestarter, twisted firestarter... :D

Hehehe!

For my money, you need a steady hand, and a good "eye" for design. I can't draw for toffee, so almost all my designs are from books, CDs and so on. Only some of the leafy bits and some of the celtic knotwork is hand-drawn. Not like real artists (like Si!) do... sigh...

But I reckon that if you could find and transfer a design to a bit of card, ink it in with felt pen, shade it with pencil, and make a good job of it, you can probably do pyrography, too!

Im probably being really thick but how do you transfer the design onto the wood without drawing it?

Its all art though! It all takes skill. :D

You can trace designs on or draw them freehand. Lots of methods!

Trace it backwards in pencil & rub it down. Or do a similar thing with an inkjet printer : http://www.scorchpyro.co.uk/Techniques.html#Tip_Transfer.Tech

Oh and another thing. Where do you pyros work? In a shed or is a spare room. Is it a messy art?

Kitchen table or anywhere I can find some space!! Not that messy at all. :D

In the square foot that's all that's left of my desk! It's not at all messy, no - just like drawing, really. Mind you, I do any painting there too...

I find that even really simple little pictures look great once you burn them into the wood, no matter what your ability.

I work in my lounge, on a small table, but am hoping to make a desk where i can sit in comfort and have all my bits and pieces stored properly!!
