Stop Hessian Falling Apart?!

Hi!
I just bought some hessian mini sacks, and small fibres come off them and get everywhere - is there any coating I can put on top of hessian to stop it doing that?
I may give PVA a go but this is probably a bad idea lol

the only thing i cn suggest is zig zag stitching the ends? or satin stitch!but as for the whole of it i dont know. could try spray mount? sorry i havnt really any idea!

Hi

I couldn't make out whether its your seams that are fraying or the whole fabric is shedding fibres.

If its the seams maybe you could zigzag stitch them or go over them with clear nail varnish which I sometimes used for obstinate fraying when I did soft furnishings,

If its the whole bag & you're not keeping it anywhere near a hot spot (eg candles, gas fire, electric hob etc) why not try spraying it with the stuff that you can use on real Xmas trees to stop the needles from falling or try hairspray. They should both spray clear.

Yes its the whole fabric shedding fibres....doy ou know what the stuff you put on Xmas trees is called? (I have a plastic tree lol)

I think a spray glue covering which dries clear would be good but god knows if that exists hehe

I was giving this a bit of thought and was thinking that if you use pva or similar glue that this would mean that the hessian would most likely go hard and maybe brittle. I thought maybe if you used some kind of sealer similar to what an artist would use on maybe something like charcoal paintings etc, sorry I don't have a name for it, hope this helps (probably not!) :)

I would try watered-down PVA, myself. It'll make them stiffer, but they should stay relatively flexible, I think. What are you using them for?

For charcoal or chalk art work, I just use firm hold hairspray. dont know if this would be strong enough, but got to be worth a try on one eh? good luck xxx ;)

I suppose the issue is the really loose weave of the fabric. I was going to suggest 'Fray check', which I use for lables and things but hessian might be too loose weave for that.

I'd vote for the zig-zag stitching.

you can buy spray moount from somewhere like staples or craft shops it is a glue though so will prob need to dry, but hairspray is a good idea, i used to use that to seal charcoal piccies!

I put PVA on a bit of it and it worked but it was a bit hard. Also, I have alot of sacks and that would be ALOT of glue and ALOT of time lol
I sort of want to make them into shoulder bags but we'll see..

I'll try the hairspray next and let you know how it goes!

Oh, they're THAT big! In which case, I don't think anything will keep them form shedding over time...
