Hi we have a pay pal account that we currently use to accept payments online at our shop, however I have just realised that they charge something like 2%, does anyone out there know of any other alternatives, ??
I've started to look into streamline and stuff, but dont really want to have a fixed contract yet and was hoping someone out there might have some bright ideas?!?!?
With regard to the website changes I said I would do I've not had chance lately and am hoping to start them in the middle of this week......
thanks:):):)

Hi
We have been using Nochex for a few years but as we have Streamline in our shop we're in the process of ditching Nochex and using Streamline for both the shop and online store. Wouldn't necessarily recommend Nochex but they are cheaper than Paypal and could be a solution until you're ready to look at contracts, especially as they have an offer on at the moment for joining.
Any questions just ask :)

Paypal is one of the cheapest..
right now i'm writing a privacy page and t&c to take credit cards is taking forever..
Its take about 1 month to setup a merchant account and get approved and only really works for offline shops or say 50k+ a year..

I think Paypal is one of the cheapest, and it's also been widely promoted via ebay, so a lot of people are familiar withy it and will feel safe using it.
Compared to a merchant account at your bank with card payment facilities, Paypal looks pretty reasonable to me.

Just thought you might like to know that another alternative is PPPay who charge 3.3% (rather than PayPal's 3.4% + 20p) so it's slightly better.

There is also "ClickandBuy" which if I am reading it correctly, as well as Credit / Debit Cards lets people pay small ammounts on their telephone bill!!!
Have been trying to find their rates on the website but it's prooving a bit difficult.

There's also RME that a lot of people on Etsy use. I'm not sure if it's just a USA thing but lots of people on Etsy use it. I haven't got a URL but it should be easy to find

If you're prepared to sign a contract then merchant accounts can be a lot cheaper than Paypal (especially for debit cards)- you need a specific e-commerce merchant acct, available from Streamline, hsbc etc. But if you don't want a minimum contract I'd say Paypal is the way to go, mostly because of it's popularity. I offer both and I'd say about 40% of my customers choose paypal as they already have paypal accounts, rather than pay by card.

Don't forget you can also get Micro payments with paypal so you pay a slightly higher percentage but only 5p per payment rather than 20p if you take lots of small payments it is well worth it!!

I would have to agree about paypal being a trusted method of payment. I know I tend to buy from a site that offers paypal and now that I have my website I find it the easiest pay to collect payment. :)
