Well, as I can't update my own site easily at the moment (technical issues) I've finally posted some pics of what I've been doing lately :

Plaques, books, badges, dreamcatchers, and some older boxes and wallets too...

I love the wooden books, what a great idea!

Thanks! I've been trying to think of a way of making books for ages, and I finally figured it out just recently. Awkward to make, but they look lovely when they're done! Even if I DO say so myself... :)

I loved the books too. How unusual.
Had a quick peek at your website - Loved your work and enjoyed your piccies. Very brave to let those birds of prey crawl all over you. Ugh, makes me shivver.

Si. Thank you, thank you! I was pleased with how the dragon and the wolves turned out... The teddies are a bit cutesy for me, though!
Fun stuff, pyrography, isn't it? :)

Had a quick peek at your website - Loved your work and enjoyed your piccies. Thank you! It's a fun hobby, and I like making all the different things. Plus, the commissions and fayres keep me busy in my spare time. Well, in what USED to be my spare time, that is!

Carol.Oh, they were lovely - very beautiful. And they did us no harm, though those beaks were wickedly sharp. But it's surprising how heavy they are...

Wow Scorch, I love the books and the 'here be dragons' signs :D I also had a nosy at your piccies - love em. Thanks, Pagan! I've had people asking for BOS for ages, you see, but it's taken me a while to figure out how to make one! There's these special bookbinding wossnames you can get, y'see, and then I had to get the wood cut specially, 'cos anything thin enough for me to cut would be wibbly, and impossible to fix hinges to...
I like dragons too - they're pretty much my favourite things to make, to be honest!

I love dragons too - but then I would, being born in the year of the Dragon :D

My daughter collects dragons in every shape and style so the dragon book would be something new for her collection. Think I am being a bit thick though because I could not find a price.

Oh, thank you, everyone! I really appreciate all your kind words. I have such fun with pyrography, and it makes me all glowy to hear all your praise! Just for you, I've made a special Flickr set for crafts, and uploaded still more piccies : http://www.flickr.com/photos/tannison/sets/72157606138937826/
Rosemary - yes, you're right, there are no prices! You're not thick, but I guess I am, for not saying somehing about it... 99% of the items there are past commissions or already sold, y'see. I do have a small suitcase full of stuff for sale, but they don't all have pics, and I've never thought of using Flickr for selling...
I'd be happy to recreate any item shown there, or make whatever's wanted on commission - but the prices would depend on how big the person wanted the item, and on what, and so on, so I work them out individually at the time.
Most of what I do is on commission - "Can you make me something with a teddybear/dragon/fish on it?" and we work out together what sort of item is wanted, what design, and so on... I don't really make many duplicates, except for little things like the "Artist's Prayer", and similar.
But the dragon book is actually one of the few things that is in my box for sale - it's £50 plus P&P. You picked the most expensive item I have, in fact, due to it's size and complexity, and the level of detail in the design - it took AGES!! :)

Do you mind if I ask a general pyrography question? I bought one a while back but found it awkward to write/draw with, as the guard seemed high up...as if you're trying to write by holding the very end of a pen. Are there ones that are 'daintier', more like a pen than my soldering iron of a thing! I know I didn't pay a lot, probably why it does look like an iron, but wondered if there are indeed different sizes and, despite the heat that comes of it, can you get ones that you can hold further down the handle? Or is it just something you get used to with use? Hope you don't mind me asking here...thank you :)

Hiya, Nettie!
No, I don't mind a bit you asking.
But I'm not a bit surprised - I have a machine like that too, and they're completely useless, in my opinion. They're just glorified soldering-irons, and I don't know how anyone ever gets any decent results with them at all - I absolutely cannot use mine with any degree of accuracy! Your hand is so far from the tip that it's hit & miss as to whether it goes anywhere near where you wanted it, there's no temperature control so you're usually scorching everything with too much heat, and the handle gets hot & burns you too.
Can you tell yet that I can't get on with them either? :)
As you can read all about in my wibble here :
http://www.scorchpyro.co.uk/Techniques.html
http://www.scorchpyro.co.uk/Chat.html
I have a wire-tip Peter Childs machine, which looks like this :
http://www.peterchild.co.uk/pyroinfo/pylist.htm
http://www.peterchild.co.uk/pyroinfo/py2.htm
and it IS just like a pen, with your hand at about that distance fom the tip. And it has temperature control, you make your own point out of a choice of wire thicknesses, and it never gets hot in your hand.
That's the only reason why I can do the fine work that I love to do - it's just impossible for me with a solid-point iron. I know that some people can do fancy work that way, but for the life of me I can't see how they do it...

Thank you VEry much for replying. It may take a while to get round to it but now I know that there's such a delicate tool I'll certainly give it another try. The fact that you actually make your own customised tips makes it very versatile...I just couldn't see how the fine work could be done with the bolder of a thing I've got! Thanks again :)

Hey, no problem - always happy to help.I can't see how anyone uses those clunky ones either! The only problem is that it's not a cheap bit of kit, at over £100.
It may be that there's someone near you where you can try one out - Peter Childs will let you, for sure, but they're in Essex somewhere...
