Picture the scene ... Toby and me walk through the door from school yesterday afternoon:
.
Me : Granny came round earlier today with some shoe boxes for you
.

Toby : Great! I'm gonna make a house for a guinea pig!
.
Me : That's a good idea. Hey! I could make you a guinea pig out of a sock to put in the box.
.
Toby : Okay!
.
Off I go upstairs to look for a suitable sock. Amazingly, none of us have any guinea-pig colour socks. I find an old grey terry sock that is a bit fluffy when turned inside out.
.
Me : Your guinea pig's going to have to be a grey one.
.
Toby : Yes, they are grey.
.
I cut up the sock and sew on some buttons for eyes.
.
Me : Right, I've done the eyes, I'll make a start on his ears.
.
Toby : They don't have ears.
.
Me : Oh! Don't they?
.
Toby : Nope
.
Me : Right. Well, I'll give him some whiskers then.
.
Toby : They don't have whiskers.
.
Me : You sure?
.
Toby : Yup.
.
Me : Right. Well, what colour nose shall I give him?
.
Toby : They don't have noses.
.
Me : Now look here! I'm pretty certain guinea pigs have noses mate.
.
Toby : Oh yes, you're right.
.
Me : Fine. So what colour nose shall I give him?
.
Toby : The same colour as his shell.
.
Me : Errr, what shell?
.
Toby : His shell!
.
Me : I'm almost fairly positive that guinea pigs don't have shells?
.
Toby : THEY DO!
.
Me : Let's have a look on the computer then and I'll show you that not only do they not have shells, but they also have whiskers and ears.
.

.
Toby : That's not a guinea pig!
.
Me : Ummm, it is .....!
.
A thought slowly occurs to me.
.
Me : Do you mean this?
.

. (common woodlice - known in this house as chucky-pigs)
.
Toby : Yes! That's a guinea pig! That's what I want you to make me!
.
Me : Garrr! THAT'S A CHUCKY-PIG!!
.
Toby : Chucky-Pig, yeah! Not guinea pig.
.
So, being the brilliant mother I am, here is my attempt at a chucky pig
.

.
I don't know about you, but I can't spot the difference.....

I don't know - I've just always known them as chucky-pigs and that's what they're called!

Fair enough, who can argue with that....I might adopt that with your permission?? I just call them boring woodlice at the moment, but that's much better.

Absolutely! Maybe I should trademark the name!

I've just texted my mum to see if she could shed any light and she said "no idea" so maybe it was something I invented as a child? Who knows?

I grew up thinking everybody called them that!

They're certainly not guinea pigs anyway!!!!

Wow, how freaky... I was only talking about this name at the weekend after showing my little girl a woodlouse.

I always called them 'chuggy pigs' when I was growing up.

It must be a South West thing, JBJB!

They're called Armadillos in this household. We also call real Armadillos the same, good job they don't roam the Warwickshire countryside!! Selina

We've always called them cheese logs and I was about 39 years old before I discovered that the term is not actually accurate! Never heard of chucky pigs though! Loving your story , reminds me of when my little pumpkins were young, sweet and innocent which was a very long time ago sadly.
Went away this weekend with the husband only to discover when we got back home again that 17 year old youngest son had thrown a party (despite strict instructions not to do so) which got totally out of hand, more than 30 people turned up, then the gatecrashers arrived, the police had been called, the fence was kicked in, bottles smashed, the pumpkin hit in the face several times and half the neighbours traumatised by all the commotion.
I am seriously not impressed - I could think of things to do with my darling son at the moment but I don't Child Line would approve .....

Reminds me of that young lad from Australia or New Zealand who got interviewed after his party went OTT and resulted in a riot with police attendance... he didn't care at all! Someone posted a link to the video on here, it was so infuriating watching this 'child' who blatantly didn't care less.

This from wikipedia!

In north Devon and north Somerset, England, a woodlouse is traditionally referred by the quaint name "Chuggy-peg", "Chuggy-pig" or "Chuggypig".

hee hee!

Other ames include: "armadillo bug" , "cheeselog" (Reading, Berkshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading%2C_Berkshire)), "doodlebug" (also used for the larva of an antlion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antlion)), "pill bug" (usually applied only to the genus Armadillidium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armadillidium)), "roly-poly","parson's pig" (Isle of Man) "potato bug", "roll up bug", "slater", "Carpenter", "Wood Bug","sow bug" and, commonly used by the Duffs in Plymouth (South Devon), "Menaces".

So there we go!

Brilliant! Don't you just love moments like that!

Rose asks me to look for Woodlice in her hair and when Daisy was a year old we caught her eating one. We saw that she had something in her mouth and when we got it out it took us a few moments to work out what it was because she'd sucked the shell off!!! Yum yum.
