Hi there fellow melts makers. I've been testing some of the melts I made yesterday & it smells quite strong and if you look when it's in the burner it's as if you can see a vapour coming from it. Does this anything, could it be I put too much scent in. I'm doing 10% scent per wax at the moment. help would be appreciated, cheers Linda

What sort of wax have you used? 10% is quite alot of fragrance, that's about the maximum I use with soy, but if you are using paraffin wax then you should use around 6%.

But yes, even if they are soy and they are too strong for your liking, then just drop the fragrance down by a couple of %.

It does sound like you are putting to much oil in & the oil is "boiling"
As purple sparkle says double check your percentages, try a next batch at 5% if this is not strong enough for you try 6% ... ect

It's all trial & error & the more you make the more experienced you will become

Totally agree it's all trial and error. 10% is a bit much, I use 8% but then mine are soy. Soy is quite fickle when it comes to fragrance oils.

Another thing to consider is that the dish is getting too hot. If the gap between the dish and the tealight is quite small then the flame will be too hot. Does that make sense?

Another possibility is the material of the burner. I have two burners at home, one has the separate glass dish and the other is a ceramic all in one. I will sometimes get the "smoking" effect from the glass dish but not from the ceramic burner. Go figure.

oh dear, don't want boiling wax that's for sure. I'm using soy so I'll just melt this lot down again & add a bit more wax. cheer all, Linda

took the advice someone gave about the flame being too close to the top part of the burner & guess what, changed the burner I was using & now I can hardly smell anything, I don't know, what a game egh, will I ever get it right, Linda

What sort of burner are you using? Is it still with the 10% melts?

the burner has a bigger gap from where the t light is & the melt is & yes it's with the same 10% melt. what a game.
Just read another thread & must make sure I put some sort of warning with my melts & tell people about safety if I sell any.

It's all trial and error in this game what works with one thing wont work with another - drives you mad half the time but you'll get there. Great though because even your mistakes you can remelt and use again. I did a cracker just last night making an age candle and the guy wants 32 so wasn't until I unmoulded it that I realised I had put the 2 in back to front - ow well back to the drawing board.

Ow I get it wrong lots and lots of times - only way to learn but you can bet I wont be making that mistake again!!!!
