Hi

I have been making nappy ckes for a couple of years now(nappies rolled up and made into a cake shape) but I have always given them as gifts or sold them to friends and family. If I wanted to sell them at a craft fair I was just wondering about whether I would be allowed to use pampers or huggies and gifts from shops such as sainsbury's,boots etc on the cake,or would this be a copyright/royalty/licensing issue?!!!

Please help

Hi Emmalou,

More like it would seem like they were made by Sainsbury's etc rather than you!

I'm not sure on the legalities of this but in general I think you would be better sourcing your own independant supply rather than using freebies.

What really attracted me to your posting was the title ...nappy cakes ...nappy cakes! ...the taste sensation of the future!!! :sm:

Do you mean that you'd just buy your materials from those shops, or that you'd want to show the shop's logo on the finished item?

Perhaps you could consider writing to one of the nappy company's marketing department describing what you do and see if they would 'support' you in any way? They might send you freebie supplies of nappies, knowing that their items are then being used in a creative market, supporting independent crafters and getting their name advertised in a completely different arena.

I may be miles out on this one but it was worth writing down!

Si.

P.S. Yes, the expression 'nappy cakes' makes me chuckle too!

Hi Emmalou, you may find mumszone useful - there are people on there that sell similar things and may be able to give you some advice.

It's just that I buy the items to make the cakes from a selection of shops and although it is ok to re-sell things from places like poundland and 'nik-nak' shops in a creative manner I wasnt sure on the policies of bigger shops

I could be wrong but I'm sure Sainsburys, Boots or wherever woldn't be bothered if you were using their products to create a nappy cake, you've bought and paid for them, they become a supplier of sorts. However isn't this an expensive way of doing things, as you're paying their high prices, perhaps you should consider buying from a wholesaler. Using their logo as a marketing, promotion tool would be a no-no however.

Im in the process of making a cake for a little boy so I will post a pic as soon as it's finished (hopefully tomorrow).
i have looked at wholesalers but to be honest majority of the cakes I have made have been gifts for people or friends and family have bought them for people so I dont mind the expense(and they don't seem to either)

Let you know as soon as I upload pic

I don't think that a shop can legislate about what you do with their goods after you've bought them. I have obtained wooden spoons, spatulas & stuff from all over the place - every supermarket you can think of. None of their business what I do with them after that!

but with things like clothes and toys they have the label with the shop logo etc on it.
I'm probably worrying for nothing
All this talk of cake is making me hungry for a nice sponge with icing and jam filling
