View Full Version : Bandwidth stealing?

It's not a biggie and in fact I'm not going to do anything about this particular incident (high school student etc) but I was wondering what you do when someone steals your bandwidth? Someone has copied an image from Cuteable - which is fine - but rather than just copying it they are linking straight to that image which uses our bandwidth. I was thinking that if this happens again and is done by someone who should know better I would leave a comment to say feel free to use our images etc but please copy it to your own website rather than using our bandwidth. If they then don't do anything about it I am tempted to change the image to something that says 'I steal bandwidth' or something equally as amusing. What do you think??

Wouldn't worry .. Just make sure your web hosting package can handle it..
I have one image that sometimes pulls just under 1gb a day.. But 50% of the people using it link back to me so its worth it...
If you block images your we have issues with socail site like craftjuice..
you can be sneaky and put your url on any images used on externals sites :)
Let know if you want that ?
How do you know when somebody has done it?

I only know as I have something on the Cuteable site that lets me know when someone links to me - quite handy really!! It's there through wordpress which is the blogging part of the site but it was there when we bought it!!

I had another online shop steal one of my images like that (and they weren't a small unknown shop either!) and the bare cheek of it peed me off more than the bandwidth issue tbh.
As tempted as I was to replace the image with my logo what I actually did was simply re-name my original image and use that...which resulted in the other shop having a little red x where my image used to be as they were still linking to the now deleted image. And it took them about 3 months to realise!!!
And how did you realise natynetty?
Is there some way of telling if somebody has pinched your photos from your website?
I know you can check URL links, but how do you check photos?

Cos my hubby told me ;) Nope seriously on my stats page I could see I was getting traffic from this particular site - everytime anyone viewed their page it was being recorded on my stats as they were obviously also viewing my image too, I clicked on the link on my stats and lo and behold there was my image on their page. For months later I was still getting it show up on my stats page but as a 404 error - as the stealing company was still trying to link to an image on my site that no longer existed under that particular name.
God I hope you understood some of that cos I'm not sure if I do
