What do you find best for covering tables? I usually use a tablecloth but I want something now that goes all the way to the floor so you cant see the table legs (and all teh boxes underneath).

Would a bedsheet look ok or would it be really obvious its a sheet. Have looked into buying material by the metre too, what do you guys think is best? Thankks. L

I have used bed sheets and to be honest they look fine. What I do is put the bedsheet on first and make sure it is touching the floor. I then put either pretty tablecloth or material on the top of the table to make it look a bit brighter.

Hi Laura (love the name btw!)

bought some black and white material. The black was SUPPOSED to be big enough to cover the table, the woman in the shop assured us it was plenty bug enough, but it was actually 2 inches short of the table itself, let alone hanging over! Anyway, i sewed the white to the black, and bought some felt. Cut out letters from the felt to spell out laura n linzis cards and sewed that on to the white material. Then we put the black part over the table, and the white part hanging down in front of the table, so we had a sign! Ill try and upload a picture to show you what I mean.

I do the same, a black king-sized sheet over the table and then a piece of cream or pale blue suede look material over the top overlapping the sides by a couple of inches. I have also used a large plain curtain instead.
Then I have a couple of boxes also covered in the suede on top of that. I find it looks neater to have separate boxes rather than ones under the cover as you get awkward folds sometimes.

From my previous incarnation as an exhibitor usually less was more. Make sure that the table is covered on all sides including ends and pin backed, to stop the public tripping over the cloth! A plain dark fabric over the table then a lighter one applied over the top looks great. Keep it simple and elegant not over fussy. Make it look classy without any gimmicks.

I think i will have to go hunting for bedsheets today.

Charity shops are a good place to start. I got a pair of single bed, dusky pink sheets last year for just under £4.00 from one of our local charity shops.

An embroidered or lacy tablecloth over the top of one of these looks fine.

Yay for charity shops! Bedsheets or curtains work brilliantly, and I picked up yards of red velvet for next to nothing once.

I know a lady who will make you embroidered banners and runners for stalls, too - lovely work...

I got some black (comes in any colour) velvet off ebay, i think it was 3.00 a meter
its lovely and it doesnt need ironing!:p

and it comes in one long peace if you ask them not to cut it!
that way you cut it to fit your table!

I use a bed sheet too and cover it with something sheer and pretty,

At christmas I have holly cover and I just change to the theme I need or what I'm selling!

I bought several metres of a nylon velvety material in black, it was really cheap in fabricland. It takes any amount of abuse and still looks nice, no creases and drapes nicely around the table.

Currently we're using a double bed 'throw' - cheap, £8.99ish and available in lots of colours.
However we're starting to do some bigger shows that demand the table be be totally covered to the floor on 3 sides and the fabric to be fire resistant. (....even though it's covered with wooden items !)......so we're (Mrs works-in-wood is...) making up a custom - made box cover for our own table - in our corporate green of course!

I've used white tablecloths with a smaller red cloth overlay at Christmas. I've also used a large dark purple velvet throw once which looked nice. I think I need to buy something to keep just for this purpose though to save me rummaging through the airing cupboard every time on the night before a fair. I think I will go with velvet as it is heavy and looks quite smart.

Just read all the answers here & it has answered the question I was going to ask later. What a fab place this is. Have a nice day one & all. Must go back to work shortly & have my nerves put to the test yet again, I'm a driving instructor.:o
