Depends what its for, but personally I love linen but don't find it practical for small children, so I'd go for linen/cotton mix esp. for dresses, I like cotton drill also.
I know thats two, but they'd be my choices.

I have just voted. I seem to be in the majority!!!!Sue xx:D
I've voted 'other' as I don't think you can beat a good quality 100% cotton.

I know pretty much diddly squat about different types of fabric but I voted for the cotton drill like denim one - only cos I love denim type fabrics on kids, I think they look so cute

Hi
I`ve voted but linen isn`t easily washable, it also doesn`t hold dye that easily and will fade after a few washings. In adults clothing that`s not so bad because it looks "comfy" but in kids clothing it just looks worn.
Cotton poplin is a nice fabric for kids dresses, shirts and tops as it`s easy care, dries quickly, doesn`t crease much and is still light and floaty.
Also depends on the garment too!

Kids tear holes in everything and always get dirty.
I suggest this material...

Rusting is good... makes them easier to catch when it's time to come in.

It must completely knacker your washing machine though? I'd hate to hear it on the spin cycle!

Yeah, I have to admit, it is a trifle on the noisy side. :p

Plenty of vaseline - no need for washing!!

Love the fantastic fabric that Woodtattoo suggests - it looks so appealing made up in the all-in-one playsuit design, particularly the mult function hat - ideal for keeping off both rain & sun.
I would imagine it to be very safe for playing in - if the little darlings fell over their knees look very well protected!
I wish it had been available when my two were little - maybe I'll suggest it to my daughter for my two grandsons & their friends
I can only come up the same as practically everyone else - cotton/linen mix or drill. But it all depends really on what you're going to make with the fabric
Good luck with your search :)

i'd choose 100% cotton myself but i also like cotton jersey though i don't think it'd print up so well
just out of interest is it being printed by spoonflower?

Cooton drill for me - well I only have experience of boys so it needs to be tough :D

At least you would know where they were Si. Easy to fix a padlock too.
I voted for cotton mix - don't like ironing too much.

I went for cotton duck as I can just imagine children wandering around looking like ducks. Quack quack!
I have no idea what the fabric is actually like though!

It totally depends on what type of garments you're going to make. I love both drill and jersey depending on what it's for. The ideal fabric for kids has not yet been invented, it has to be hard wearing, stain resistant, stretchy, and cute....

Linen creases so a no no for looking smart.
I'd have said any heavish weight cotton. I voted for cotton drill as I'm imagining it a bit two toned like denim so it'll disguise the stains, will be tough, and my sons get away with not ironing it ;)
Cotton jersey's nice for T shirts though....
Mmm cotton duck - is that the soft one? That might be nice...
Good job I voted before thinking about it!

Cotton duck is a type of canvas isn't it, think directors chairs, hammocks, canvas top shoes? If so, it's a bit too heavy duty for kids clothing I think.

Fingering through the samples Mr Woolfin sent me you are right. Cotton duck is canvas like. The one I have is more like denim jeans than a deck chair but I expect it coming in varying toughnesses.

I voted other because I would go for cotton or a cotton mix. Organice cotton also lasts longer and takes more wear than normal cotton (as according to a report a few months ago on breakfast anyway!)

...Does it have to be one of the fabrics listed?
The nearest I go for is linen/cotton mix, as long as it's more cotton than linen. Or cotton drill for heavy-wear items, but this makes for bulky seams.
Given a free reign, it would have to be 100% cotton - natural, breatheable and better for sensitive skin. And, to be really eco, organic.

Hiya Jules - where have you been?? Nope it doesn't have to be one of those fabrics listed. These were just the ones I could get at the time. 100% cotton would be good.

Bit late answering this one, but just seen it,
I have voted for other, as I think a cotton/polyester mix. It is hard wearing enough, soft enough, breathable, easy to wash and minimal ironing.
When I buy my children's school polo shirts I always get a mix as I find I can tumble dry and hang them straight up and they dont need ironing. The 100% cotton ones crease terribly, shring upwards and discolour faster.
For more hardwearing items (eg trousers) I would go for cotton drill.

I replied other. I would use natural, preferably organic fabrics, cotton etc is fine, but bamboo feels amazing and is really tough for baby/children's clothes!

I love bamboo but someone (probably on here) said turning it into thread is really evil and destructive to the environment.....which has put me off......

Hello just seen this! I voted drill, as it is durable but at the same time not as heavy weight as denim. I find it easy to work with too. xx

I voted for a cotton/linen mix as it is cool, comfortable and not as crease-prone as pure linen. A 100% cotton would be my other choice.

100% cotton is usually your best option - although jersey is also very good as its soft on the skin.

There are a lot of polyester, or polycotton, fabrics that can be used for lots of clothing, including children's clothes. With the recent cotton price hike, it may also become much more popular in the near future.

Ah ha! The worm might have turned. The poly bit of polycottons is made from oil and oil prices are rising. Manmade fibres are going to be the caviar of the fabric world and good old wool is making a come back.

100% cotton for me unless it's for dungeress and trousers which need something far stronger to take the wear. Love the stainless steel siut of armour idea every Mum should have one. Sound proof would be nice

I quite like pure cotton or poly cotton blend. I agree with all the comments about linen and cotton duck is great for boys pants as it's tough but not dainty enough for pretty dresses I've found.
