Hi everyone

I'm trying to integrate paypal onto my website but am having all manner of difficulty deciding how.

I've had a look through two different things and have no idea which one I need...

Website payments standard (does this mean u can only buy one thing at a time?)
Paypal shopping cart (but can people just pay with debit / credit card??)

If anyone can advise me that would be super, I really need some help!!

Thank you

I'm a little confused with some details of dealing with payments online too, if you have an application such as google checkout or paypal etc do you then have to have a machine to process the payments or will the money just transfer over into your allocated account?

I use paypal shopping cart on my website.

It allows buyers to add more than one item to their cart
It allows you to set rules about postage charges
It allows you to add drop-down menus or options (ie, the customer can type in what name they want on their product)
It allows them to change quantities

Hi Helen,

Website payments standard is what you will need to be able to accept payment through paypal. This includes your shopping cart so this is what you would need to start up.

The shopping cart is part of website payments standard or if you already have some form of accepting payments on your website this can be integrated with it.

As you are wanting to be able to accept debit/credit payments etc from customers you would need the Website Payments Standard and don't worry about the shopping cart as you get this in the package.

HTH.

Cheers.

I use paypal shopping cart with my website, http://www.rockmylobsterx.com (http://www.rockmylobsterx.com/) if you want to have a look at how it fits into the set up of the site, and feel free to add things to your cart to see how it looks (just remember not to actually buy anything!). I think I should probably look into making my own buttons rather than using paypals own ones though, they're a bit ugly :(

This subject interest me too. I was playing about on your website Linz and placed an item in the shopping cart. I didnt take it to checkout so I am presuming that if I had it would have then asked me to sign into paypal or can you pay with a card without signing into paypal. I know that on another website that uses paypal I have to sign in. Paypal have my account details but I havent verified them. If I verify my account can I then accept payment on my website if decide to go down this road?

Hi

Paypal uk now gives buyers the option to use their credit card without setting up a Paypal account.

The only problem I have found with my Paypal shopping cart is when you only have one item to sell, it doesnt cancel the button when someone buys it. So if 2 or 3 people buy the same item before you notice it is sold it could be embarrasing. There is a work aroun by editing the HTML that make it error on the 2nd purchase etc but I have yet to see if it works. The add to basket button doesn't allow for an amount of items for sale. It presumes you have an unlimited supply, which is abit awkward if selling a single piece of original artwork.

Dizzydiza,

With a standard 'Personal' account you can only accept a limited number of payments if the buyer pays by credit card (if they have a Paypal balance it doesn't matter but this is unlikely). If you are planning on selling more than a handfull of products in a year, you need a business Paypal account.

The verification process is a security feature. When you first open an account and add bank account details to it, your account is unverified until you 'prove' that it is your bank account. They do this by adding a few pence to your account and then asking you how much they've added.

This is supposed to add customer confidence because it makes you a little more traceable.

As for the different types of payment modules. If you use the standard service, your customer is taken to Paypal's website to carry out their transaction. This means you never have access to credit card details etc. For most small businesses this is ideal because you don't have the same worry about security on your site. Some people think this isn't as 'smooth' for the customer and it looks better if everything is done on your site. Others feel it is more secure to use Paypal's site and not have the responsibility of dealing with a customers payment details.

Hope this helps!!

Does anyone know of a way to change the colour of the paypal buttons - Orange is not a great colour and will clash with my website's colour scheme!

You need to create your own button image, save it to somewhere like photobucket that will give you a URL link and then use that URL link in paypal where it says something like "host your own button"

I hate the buttons too Stacey, but I see you're a Mr Site user like me, and I'm pretty sure that even if you are able to change the buttons, Mr Site changes them all back whenever you republish! I hope I'm wrong and someone posts on here to correct me though because I'd love to change the buttons on my site.

Ooh this has answered a whole lot of my questions. I had a feeling I was missing something about the quantities being unlimited onsite, the security issue etc but now I see it is all as it should be..what a relief!
All I need now is someone to buy something..lol
