My cad course starts in a couple of weeks so I thought Id start up a thread to let you know how it goes.

Im trying not to think about it at the moment, way too out of my comfort zone. Then agaian it could be the best thing il ever do.

Oh yes indeedy it could - how exciting! :sm:

Hey I dont think we were meant to leave this world feeling like we'd just been "comfortable" throughout - nor we were designed to leave it without sporting wrinkles or spare tyres either ;):):D

Good luck with the course, I'm sure you will get a lot from it. Judging by my wrinkles (see Focus on Lif'e comment) I have obviously not been living in my comfort zone!;)

I bet you'll have fun as long as you don't let the computer hurt you as this looks painful.:pc:

I really liked it.

Lovely teacher, like a mad auntie and a group of students from teens to 50's.

Trouble is I only understood about 10% of it.
I could get the shapes on the screen and I mastered erasing them but then she went onto zoom and extends and Osnap!!!!!I didnt understand any of that!!

None of the commands worked for me, numbers appeared all over the screen which didnt seem to relate to cm's/mm's.
The teacher although lovely and very knowledgeable seemed to speed along typing in commands then things happened and I couldnt work out how they were happeneing coz they didnt work for me.

Everybody around me seemed to understand and was just speeding through her instructions!!

Basically I liked it, but didnt get to grips with most of it!Im so glad theres no exams at the end.

Apparently I could do a City & Guilds cousre in September, but guess il only go for that if I can get to grips with this first course.

Give it time!
I only learnt to drive a few years ago and to start with I thought I'd never be able to. I could do what Jim told me to, but suddenly one day it clicked and now I can drive (a car ...... I've been driving people mad for years!)

If you get the concepts then your set. The rest is just detail that you can hang onto the basic core ideas of what it can do etc...

The detail will come with practice and familiarity...

Sounds like you're doing great to me... well done!

Thanks all, thats nice of you.
I jsut felt so incompetant as the 2 people to either side of me looked like they were jsut sat back waiting for everybody else after the lady gave us something to try.

That command bar at the bottom kept changing and didnt make any sense what so ever!!Oh well, I wasnt the only one, a couple of the older people had troubl too, guess I have to admit to not being a youngster anymore.

Odd thing is, I came away from that lesson wanting to eat more vegetables and basically eat more sensibly!!

Hi Seahorse

Cad is one of those programs where you need to pretty much forget everything you know about computers and start again, it does not respond to many of the commands you already use.

Try http://www.cadtutor.net/

I was having problems deleting layers off a drawing this week and there was no one available to tell me how to do it, so I went to Cad tutor and searched for it, there was a forum type thing (I know, I have been going to other forums!) which told me the answer.

I also have Autocad for dummies which has some useful info in, I got it off amazon for less than £10

Glad you enjoyed the start of your course, its early days yet and there wouldn't be much point to the course if you knew it all before you started, sounds like your going to be fine.

Just been looking at the tutorials on cadtutor, they are fab.

Had a look to get the autocad downloaded but seems I need a college email which the teacher hasnt given us yet.Shame as I think the practice would have been a help.

Ive also just ordered autocad for beginners.

Eeeh never judge by appearances lovey, those who sit back looking like they've finished are often the ones who're just as lost as everyone else but are either too timid/shy/arrogant to admit it :)

I was talking to a senior dude at one of these BNI taster events a few weeks ago and he said it's usually the people who're a bit concerned about keeping up who try the hardest and are the most successful in the long run

I'm sure you'll do brilliantly but dont be afraid to ask if you're not sure, sometimes you do the rest of the class a big favour by asking questions

Good luck!

Morning peeps,Im happy to say I actually understood about 80% of yesterdays lesson.Luckily we ended on something which totally confused me so I didnt have to sit there for ages and feel stupid.Hopefully we will go over it again next week.

I have looked through autocad for dummies....and dont understand any of it!Im sure itl sink in at some point tho.

80% is a lot better than last week. Look at the improvement in 7 days.
You will get there in the end if you knew 100% you wouldn't have to go to classes.:mf:

Love hearing how your getting on. I'm really proud of you for doing this course.

I've got my autocad level 2 exam tomoz, I've had to learn it for my work though not my craft. Not sure how I would use it for my craft, just thought it was used for engineering and product design.:)

Is that a City and Guilds course two hoots?
How have you found it?

I mainly did it as I like to design so may help to get any design job.
I could draw circles and use polar arrays for necklace work.

Yes it was the city & guilds And I passed my exam yeh! if you want to get into design as in graphics and illustration I would recommend an Adobe Illustrator course and an Adobe Photoshop course as they are both industry standards for design. Other things they can ask for is experience in Coral Draw, and Quark Express. I hope this helps,

Jenny:)
