I've got a large number of wooden jewellery boxes and chests that I'm currently starting to decorate and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for different designs etc. They can be as funny, quirky, pretty, unusual as you wish... I will post pictures of any Forum ideas that I turn into actual boxes! I'm starting to work on some animal designs that are similar to my Owl key box for starters.

These are some of the types of box that I have completed in the past...

Wow, your boxes are great. I don;t know how you have the patience (and skill) to do that!!

I ahve some pattern books and Motifs etc... that I sometimes use for inspiration. They ahve some gret designs in them.

Ever thought about doing design in art nouveau, art deco, or japanese, or greek even...

I could scan a few ideas in and zip 'em across to you if you like.

Steve :)

I use similar sources for inspiration sometimes as well... I have scrap books full of magazine cuttings/rippings as well as all my arty books!
All ideas welcome though... just looking to try some new ideas and what better place to ask around for crafty inspiration than the Forum?
I have one design idea that I'm working on that may appeal to a certain Forum member... nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more... ;)

Well there's no good me suggesting anything as it would be something pink and girlie!

Can you do colours?

I quite like fairy type things ... mushrooms?

Do you use tattoo books as inspiration?

Ooooooh you can't leave it like that - you've got to say who might like it! If I'm looking for patterns etc I have a wander round the nearest wallpaper shop to see what they have to offer. Maybe not what you are looking for but it might help. I always find Flickr very inspiring too.

How do you decorate them? What about covering them in fabric, or decorating with beads? HTH

I wonder if it clucks?! :mf: LOL

Having seen your lovely wedding place name settings Si, I just wondered about boxes with some words on? Like nursery boxes with some words of well known nursery rhymes running around the box with nursery type pictures on?

Maybe some with the words of famous poems or hymns etc - you could have romantic themed boxes with matching words running round - inspirational sayings - religious themed ones (that might be nice to keep In Memorium keepsakes inside?)

Ooh yes! Fairy toadstools! Got a thing about Mushrooms and Toadstools at the moment.

I'm also a mad keen William Morris fan. Some of his designs (or even adaptations of) would look fab burnt onto wood.:)

Now that's a good idea - like the fab Nursery Rhyme plate! It would be great as a new baby gift or Christening gift certainly.

That's a good idea... I might do that for the really small bean pot sizes. I expect little fabric pouches must be good for tooth fairy bags as well for all the textilers out there, as they would be easier to put under pillows?

Damn you, Shaz, and your psychic intuition! :D

Here are the first of three new box designs and yes, the first was nearly called "Escape From Camp Swirly"!

My little girl named the third one as that's what she calls the featured creature!

Let me know what you think.

Your stuff is amazing!! I love a lot of it and would be hard pressed to point out a favorite.

I like the idea of colours.......can you do that?

Think a selection of princess, pirates, firemen, mermaids, horses, dogs, cats etc etc may go down well for children.

Love the idea of adding verses to them, if not outside, what about inside?

Roses, now I love roses..........in fact all flowers are beautiful.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Pauline. I have thought about adding a small detail or design on the inside of boxes before, and I also like the idea of verses or text as well. I haven't tried colouring the wood with inks yet but it may make a nice feature.

My 400th post has just been completed!! :D

Hah - escape from camp Swirly would have been good. 'No chicken escapes from Swirly's craft room!' Said in a Mrs Tweedy voice obviously.

I like the bumble bee one and congrats on your 400th post!

It's probably the only Swirly-related chicken that hasn't been given a good stuffing of any variety! :p

LOL Mystic Meg watch-out ;)

The chicken box is brilliant, and I love the fence detail all around the bottom, starts you thinking about all sorts of other designs you could do like that (you might have done em already Si?) - with grass and flowers all round the bottom and birds flying on the top - maybe the sea and underwater creatures round the bottom and stars on the top - or some sort of war memorial ones with the (whadya call it? the battlefield? the tops?) at the bottom and peace images like doves or something on the top

Soz, waffling now :)

The Bumbly Bee's a sweetie too

Can I suggest a Clydesdale horse with horseshoes round it ;)

Your boxes are very beautiful. Sometimes I sell boxes in my shop, the most popular box is for keeping Angel Cards in. A box to fit Doreen Virtue Angel cards would be a seller especially if it had an angel on the front. also a Tarot card box. The most popular motifs I sell are dragons, wolves, fairies, angels,
om signs for yoga enthusiasts, yin yang, pentagram, ganesh, buddah, green man and elephants.

Thanks for that, I have made some angel boxes before. Haven't checked to see if the Doreen Virtue cards fit in them so that might be a plan for next time!
